ACHIEVEMENTS

HIGHEST RANKED ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS

  • Low cost rapid Point-of-Care COVID-19 diagnostic technology
    • Importance: Due to the current global COVID-19 pandemic, rapid identification of COVID-19 has been a major challenge in the global health care in mitigating this global crisis. This developed COVID-19 testing device that uses RT-LAMP (Reverse Transcription Loop-mediated isothermal amplification) technology, a single-tube technique for the amplification of DNA, can test up to 6 patients simultaneously using nasopharyngeal swab samples and gives results within 20 minutes. Unlike other tests on the market, this small, low cost device uses artificial intelligence and a unique color change detection technique to identify the presence of COVID-19 meaning that samples can be tested on location and do not need to be sent away to a laboratory. The technology has 100% Specificity and 92% Sensitivity which are much higher than similar technology available in the consumer domain. Impact: It will have a huge impact on global health care and its economic recovery. This will help all developing countries where they do not have proper health care systems for testing in mitigating the crisis and bringing their economic activities to a healthier level. Due to the low cost, quicker turn out time, higher stable performance and no human involvement in reading the result and not sending them to a laboratory, this technology will have a significant impact in all developing countries where they do not have resources, technology and money to spend on large scale PCR testing. It will also have a bigger impact on the aviation industry in seamless testing passengers before and after air travel. Relevant output: Already commercialized as VH6 in cooperation with VIDIIA - UK, several press releases, several media interviews (BBC, international news, newspapers, blogs), one journal paper (Impact factor 3.82), EPSRC Impact Acceleration grant.
  • Low cost rapid Point-of-Care diagnostic system for livestock management
    • Importance: Identifying diseases in livestock is a major problem especially in developing countries where no health care facilities are available for farmers. It has created massive problems for their national economies since all animals need to be culled in a pandemic. Proposed technology will provide a low cost Point-of-Care solution to farmers with an integrated mobile phone technology in identifying most common diseases in livestock farms. Our research will open a new path towards developing a pioneering platform for early diagnosis of viral and bacterial infectious pathogens mainly in poultry farms. This proposed work will enhance the ability to control these pathogens through quick and cost effective diagnostics. Impact: The diagnostic tests will provide the knowledge base for commercial product development that will directly contribute to countries economic competitiveness and will foster economic development especially in developing country’s agricultural sectors. Improvement in the ability to rapidly identify viral and bacterial infections in near real time will benefit farmers and the rural livelihoods, safeguard public health and food security. It will also help significantly to develop national economies of developing and developed countries. In particular, this will have an immediate impact on developing countries' livestock production. Relevant Output: The development of the complete end-to-end infrastructure and the application of cutting-edge technologies to effectively diagnose and predict diseases in animal farms has been completed. Technology has been demonstrated in Manila, Philippines. Currently, it is being tested in the Philippines and it is being planned to create a spin-out in taking this technology forward.
  • Develop the first user interaction aware content generation and distribution for the next generation social television system.
    • Importance: Even though television used to be the main source of visual content for decades, with the advancement of countless alternative transmission mediums, the television audience has been looking elsewhere for entertainment and infotainment. The classic sequential organisation of television shows, which has little room for user engagement, has been less appealing for the modern audiences. The proposed technologies produced innovative modes of user interaction for broadcasting to relax the rigid and passive nature of present broadcasting ecosystems. It will have a significant impact on how we experience TV broadcasting contents in the future. Impact: Content producers, for the first time, will be able to generate creative media applications with richer content level user interactivity. Cloud-service providers will be able to monetise their infrastructure through leveraging the increased demand for strategically located in-network media processing. General public will be able to share personalised content with their social peers and will have access to more engaging personalised content as well as socialise themselves with community members having common interests. Combining all impacts, the proposed technologies will have a huge impact on future broadcasting businesses. Relevant Output: The proposed technology has been experimented as a way of reducing the cost of signing media content for hearing impaired people. Developed the full system and demonstrated it to the public in the International Broadcasting Conference in 2016, 2019, 2020 and NAB in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020. The technology has been awarded the most prestigious NAB technical innovation 2020 award for its application in signing media content for hearing impaired people in broadcasting. International peer reviewed journals – 6 (Impact Factor between 2.8 to 4.2), International peer reviewed conference papers – 30+ (Number of citations for all publications >540) and International invited Talks – 3.
  • Decoder complexity aware video encoder
    • Importance: The energy consumption of a consumer electronic device during media playback is tightly coupled with the complexity of the content as well as the codec. This is due to its significant demand of computational and energy resources for real-time processing of the complex high frame rate media contents. Therefore, reducing the decoding complexity of encoded bit streams has become a compelling challenge which needs to be overcome, especially in the case of resource constrained consumer electronics devices such as a mobile phone where battery power is the major constraint. Impact: Proposed codec reduced the device energy consumption up to 40% and therefore it will have a huge impact on everybody’s daily usage of their phones. Users can extend the usage of the phone without charging them regularly. More importantly it will have a greater impact on reducing the global energy consumption by a significant margin since currently most of the global energy is consumed for the mobile ICT domain. Relevant Output: First such algorithm for the state-of-the-art video codec, International peer reviewed journals – 2 (Impact factor between 2.8-4.2), International peer reviewed conference papers – 5 (Number of citations>105), International invited Talks – 1, Two patents have been prepared but due to funding restrictions they were not preceded by the university, Submit it to MPEG DASH standardisation.
